Be About the King’s Business

Luke 19:11-27

From Pastor Juan

Jesus tells the parable of the minas to his followers to remind them that, while the kingdom is already present, the coming of the kingdom in its fullness must await his return. So, Jesus prepares his disciples by illustrating from the parable that until he returns, they are to be about the king’s business. As his followers, this is true of us as well. Allow me to encourage you with two realities:

1. The Lord Jesus has given us everything we need to serve him faithfully. That’s the point of the parable of the minas. The nobleman gave each of the servants one mina, and they were to engage in business until his return (v.13). Here we are to remember King Jesus’s generosity. Everything that we have is from Jesus. It belongs to him. We are only managers of all he has given us. What has he given us?

  • Physical health and strength, intellectual capacities, vocational competencies

  • Time, talents, and treasures

  • Spiritual gifts for the building up of the church

  • Ministries to serve one another out of love for God and our neighbor.

  • Even good works that he predestined beforehand for us to do (Ephesians 2:10).

2. Until Jesus returns, we are to use all he has given us and put it to work for his kingdom. How? We obey his commands, serve his ends, and that results in a faithful witness. So, ask yourself these questions this week:

  • What capacities or competencies do you have? How are you using them for Jesus?

  • What time, talents, and treasures do you possess? How are you investing each for Jesus?

  • What spiritual giftedness have others affirmed in you? How are you exercising it?

  • What service or ministry are you able to provide for Jesus? How are you serving?

  • What good works are you doing for Jesus’s glory and other’s good?

  • What opportunities do you have to tell others of Jesus? How are you taking advantage of them?

Jesus expects that we will be faithful followers. Or, as we say at High Pointe – wholehearted followers. When we are faithful managers of what Jesus has given us, we become faithful witnesses to who Jesus is. So, until Jesus returns, let us be about his business.

Gospel Partner of the Month: Liz Paine, Uganda

Our sister Liz Payne went to the mission field in her years of retirement to serve the brothers and sisters of Ssenge Baptist Church in Uganda. Serving alongside pastor Bosco Bukeera and his wife Heidi, Liz gives herself to discipling women, caring for the families in her community, and most recently, setting up a ministry Threads of Faith, where ladies are trained in sewing skills to be able to help provide for their families.

Liz is sent out by High Pointe Baptist Church and is a member of UFM Worldwide, a missions sending agency out of the United Kingdom. It is a joy to see our sister serve and hear of her work. Please pray for Liz that the Lord would sustain her health, give her stamina, and allow her to see fruitfulness from her gospel ministries.
