Don’t Fear Man. Fear God!
When writing to Timothy, who was pastoring the church in Ephesus when false teachers opposed him and the gospel, he reminded him, “...all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12). This is the NORMAL Christian life.
We may not presently experience the extreme or high persecution the church has endured over the last 2,000 years, but we should and must prepare for it. This is what Jesus is doing for his disciples in Luke 12:1-12. He exhorts them to (1) pursue integrity, not hypocrisy (vv.1-3); (2) fear God, not man (vv.4-7); and (3) rely on the Spirit, not self (vv.8-12). Times of difficulty will come. Persecution will arrive. We must prepare now. How?
Believe the truth of God (Big God theology) and the gospel (Christ had died for us).
Pursue integrity (let your life match what your lips speak).
Fear God, not man (the worst they can do is kill you. God is the final judge).
Trust God (he cares for you, for you are more important than birds).
Rely on the Holy Spirit (he has saved us, given us Scripture, and will teach us what to say when we need to say something).
When opposition rises because we are followers of Jesus, you don’t have to be anxious. That doesn’t mean we won’t be rejected, mocked, publicly shamed, harmed, or even killed. But because we are God’s children and Jesus’s friends, the worst they can do is kill us. To be absent from the body is to be present with Christ.
