Questioning Jesus

From Pastor Juan

In Luke 20:20-39, the religious leaders question Jesus to try and entrap him. Their aim is to find something they can hold against Jesus to hand him over to the Roman authorities. Jesus answers their questions and silences them.

  • We love Jesus, so we would never attack him in the ways the religious leaders did, but are there some ways we question Jesus – his love for us, his authority over us, his plans for us?

In Luke 20:41-44, Jesus responds to the religious authority with a question of his own: “If the Messiah is David’s son, why does David call him his LORD?” Jesus’s point is that he is something more than just a descendant of David; he is the LORD, David’s LORD. And as David’s LORD, he is also the LORD of the religious authorities.

  • We have received Jesus as King and LORD, but are there some ways we refuse to submit to his Lordship or are there some areas of our lives that we refuse to surrender to him?

After correcting his accusers in Luke 20:45-44, Jesus condemns his accusers and commends the faithful widow (Luke 20:45-21:5). Jesus exposes the hypocrisy of the religious leaders and points to the poor widow who gave all she had as an example of those who are worthy of the kingdom and resurrection – not because of what she gave but because of her love for the Lord.

  • Jesus wants us to look at the hypocrisy of the religious leaders side by side with the humble dependence of the poor widow so we may ask ourselves, Do I look more like the hypocritical leaders or more like the humble and dependent widow?

As those who have welcomed Jesus as King and LORD, we are to render unto Jesus all that is due him. So, let us submit wholeheartedly to Jesus.
