The Scandal of the Cross

It’s no surprise the cross of Jesus is scandalous. The apostle Paul reminds us that “the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing” (1 Corinthians 1:18). And Christ crucified is a “stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles” (1 Corinthians 1:25). And yet, Jesus did suffer and was crucified. Why? To accomplish God’s saving plan. That’s what Jesus told the twelve in Luke 18:31-34. But they didn’t understand God’s plan. They couldn’t see that the only way for sinners to be forgiven and set free from sin was for Jesus to take our place and receive the penalty of sin on our behalf.
It’s the same with us also, isn’t it? Sometimes it’s hard for us to understand God’s plan. We expect God to work in certain ways, so we cannot see what he’s doing because of our false expectations. The good news is that Jesus opens the eyes of the blind, like he did with the blind beggar in Luke 18:35-43. And when we SEE who Jesus is, we will FOLLOW him wherever he leads.
1. If Jesus has opened your eyes to SEE and know who he is, how are you helping unbelievers SEE Jesus – that’s evangelism?
Let’s think of intentional ways to help unbelievers see Jesus that they might come to know him and his salvation.
2. How are you helping other Christians FOLLOW Jesus – that's discipleship?
Have your radar on for those who might need our help to follow Jesus and offer to help.
3. Do YOU need help following Jesus? ASK for help?
We are not meant to live the Christian life alone. We are family, and together we will help one another see, love, know, and follow Jesus.
