The Damning Danger of Loveless Orthodoxy
It is possible to have right doctrine and still go to hell. James reminds us that even the demons have orthodox theology (James 2:19). And Jesus rebukes the church in Ephesus for finally removing false teachers and apostles but abandoning their first love (Revelation 2:1-7).
The Christian life is not less than right theology. It is more. It is about faith working through love (Galatians 5:6). And this is what the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-27 is all about. The Jewish layer, an expert in the Law, has the right answer to Jesus’s question about those who inherit eternal life (v.27). But, while he has the right answer, Jesus exposes that he does not have eternal life because he does not love his neighbor.
We do not merit eternal life by doing good deeds any more than we do by believing the right theology. But when we truly know God (theology), we will genuinely love God (doxology). And when we genuinely love God, we will sacrificially love others (discipleship). Our love for others shows we love God and have eternal life.
What does your doctrine (what you believe) produce? For the expert in the Law, it produced a false confidence that he could give the right doctrinal answer. What about you? How does what you believe work itself out in your every day relationships?

Gospel Partner of the Month: Reaching and Teaching International Ministries – B.M.
Reaching & Teaching International Ministries (RTIM) seeks to advance the gospel by partnering with local churches as they send qualified missionaries to make mature disciples, establish healthy churches, and train local leaders around the world.
You may know of RTIM because we sent Davey and Callie Davis and the P family through this sending organization. This month, we want to highlight our support for B.M. B and his wife served for seven years as missionaries in Central Asia, working in evangelism, discipleship, and church planting. After returning to the US, B spent six years as a global trainer, traveling around the world to equip international church leaders for ministry. He desires to see the gospel spread and churches established among the nations of Central Asia. B is a graduate of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife have three children.
